Reviewing: Trinity Seven

Trinity seven is described as a ‘romantic comedy’.

Myanimelist even goes as far as to say “ romantic comedy but sometimes serious magical school story”.

First let’s look at the term rom-com

which means romantic comedy.

Quick breakdown

First there is romance, let’s look at the dictionaries interpretation of romance “a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love.”.

Okay lets look at what the dictionary has to say about comedy, “professional entertainment consisting of jokes and sketches, intended to make an audience laugh.”.

Finally the age recommendation of this anime is 13+

I am glad that we took the time to establish the criteria this anime placed itself in before I gave my opinion.
Trinity Seven succeeds in being an anime, that being it is drawn and animated, however the rest of its descriptors except for echi seem to be misplaced.

Now I am not 13 anymore but I do remember being 13 and I am not sure I would have found the anime romantic or comedic.

You see there is a difference between thinking “that half naked girl is funny” and “that half naked girl is hot” so if we are judging the comedic value of this anime by how little clothing the girls have on at any given time. Then yes it’s hilarious.

But if we were to judge it to the standard of which the dictionary well… dictates, then the show is not even worth a chuckle. I know for a fact I didn’t laugh throughout the entire duration of the show and smiled only during certain interactions. However I don’t think 15- seconds of smiling really deserves the title of comedy.

As for romance… Sure there is ‘some’ romance, maybe in the average mind of a 14 year old who has discovered porn, maybe.(its a stretch but it exists)

However if we were to switch the placing of a few descriptors, I dunno maybe romance with echi, then buried the term romance I think we’d have a better descriptor for the show, lets see “Echi show in a magical school”. I feel that is an accurate description of the show.

Yes I didn’t even bother with the “serious” descriptor because in all honesty even a 5 year old wouldn’t consider this anime serious
.

So lets talk about the plot a bit…

I say a bit because its kind of hard to talk about it in depth since its an anime that’s whole first season was built for a second season, don’t you just love anime like that?

Anyway Trinity Seven is about our main character fudou akio who stumbles into the magical world after cuasing a disasterous event known as a collapse phenomenon that kills thousands of people including his childhood friend. Not understanding what happened he wishes to do everything in his power to find his friend again. (who by all the laws of physics in the real world and this magical one should be dead)

And there you have it.

So obviously he goes to magic school with a bunch of hot girls (aka true plot) and they tell him he is the strongest and most bad ass character only he doesn’t know how to use his powers yet and its their job to help him.

Oh and there is 7 girls in particular he needs to get help from. I’m not going to continue with the plot because in all honesty the plot only continues towards the end of the anime so I guess its considered spoilers and you probably won’t watch this show for its “plot”.

The animation in this anime is nice to look at, which is nice because theres not much else to say about the show other than “it was nice to look at”, the fight scenes… If you can call them that are reminiscent of DBZ but without any epic flashing or hair growth; Just two seconds of action followed by a long bit of dialog then another few seconds maybe a teleport then a shocked expression then another explanation of how that all worked.

I guess they thought it would be the best way to not break the viewers immersion, which would be acceptable if we had any immersion. I’m not fond of shonen or the big three due to the nature of constant stopping and starting to save budget. Only for anime like naruto they save their budget then blow it all during an important arch producing nice fights that make you go “oh well I understand why people watch it” however Trinity Seven just ends.

Yep it continues this fight, stop, talk, fight, stop, talk, routine to the very end giving us nothing.

So after all that do I hate trinity seven? No. Do I dislike Trinity Seven? No. In fact I found it a quite enjoyable experience.

Wait what?

You see as an anime reviewer I have to judge how an anime is executed; how it transitions from point A to point C, this is not taking into my opinions, other reviewers put their own feelings first however I like to do things a bit different.

As for my personal enjoyment of the show I found it watchable and unlike many I don’t consider something watchable to equal good, the fact that I managed to chug through 12 episodes of average anime doesn’t make it good, it makes it average.

I actually liked the characters and in all honesty I felt Trinity Seven let itself down when it began trying to drag the viewer into the plot of magic societies and impending doom, what the show does well is in the filler.

Getting to know each character better learn about their backgrounds and events that happened was actually interesting, It added flavour. Not to mention the main character isn’t a wimpy kid hes actually relatable i.e he wants to have sex with girls just as much as any other human but he doesn’t have his nose running like a hose at the glimpse of a good looking female.

The characters for the most part are grounded in reality despite them all being a slice out of the outaku’s wet dream archetype book.

To me it was almost as if the anime was rejecting the plot it had set up for itself trying to search for realism in an unrealistic setting, trying to create relatable characters in an un-relatable scenario.

Also the soundtrack is actually quite decent adding another positive note to the series its especially good at capturing tension and mystery I specifically like this song

Well that’s the end of my review

If we are doing the cliché 1-10 I’d give it a 5 its not too bad its not too good.

I wouldn’t recommended it to anyone who doesn’t watch anime, maybe recommend it to someone who has some time to kill.
